In early times Assyria was a small and unimportant.  It was in northern Mesopotamia. For hundreds of years the Assyrians were ruled by more important states. Finally they won there own empire. So now the unimportant state rules them selves.

The Assyrians chief god was Ashur.  They also worshipped a mother called Ishtar.  Also the Assyrians believed in demons ghost and things like that.  There was a city called Ashur after the chief.  The city was built on a river so the ships could unload there trade.  Ashur had a powerful council of people that know a lot about the history of there culture.

The Assyrians like the Babylonians had laws.  If people broke these laws they could get there ears cut off. They could also be wiped severely. The whippings were so bad that they ripped the skin open. To whip them they used a leather rope to make it more painful.

The Assyrians had to fight to keep their empire controlled. The foot soldiers were armed with bows and arrows, slings for hurling stones and lances. The cavalry, that is the soldiers that rode on horseback, also used bows and arrows. The army also used siege engines witch had battering rams and space inside for men with bows and arrows. Also chariots each carried a team of a driver and a few bowman and shield – bearer.
