Sargon of Akkad

by Andrew S.

Sargon of Akkad was a great ruler in Mesopotamia.  He ruled around 2371 BC, he ruled in a newly founded city called Akkad.  The people of Akkad were very skilled in art.  Sargon, in Akkiadian arru kënu, the ‘true lawful king’ is a Semitic king and founder of a dynasty of Akkad(Sumerian Agade).  The exact location of Sargon’s city of Akkad is unknown, but it probably was not that from Kish.  It was also a newly found city, Kish was founded in about 2350 BC.  The dynasty of Akkad lasted until about 2200 BC.  The actual spelling of Sargon’s name is Sharru-Kin. At first he was a royal cup-bearer to Ur-Zababa, King of Kish.  After Ur-Zababa was defeated by the Lugalzaggessi, Sargon(Sharru Kin) went to Agade to build his base.  After consolation his power Sargon attacked Uruk.  Next Sargon defeated Ensis, he probably took all of Sumer, along with some of the remaining Urukte army.  After that Sargon quickly conquered Ur and he also conquered the rest of Sumer.  When he finally reached the Persian Gulf, then he washed his weapons in it.  Next Sargon went to the west and his conquests brought him “to the cedar Forests and the silver mountains”,that is Lebanon and the Taurus mountains.  Finally Sargon fought Elam, Barakhshi, and western Iran.  The war with the Elamites was a tough fight.  After a while he defeated Susa and made it the capital of Akkad.  Than the Akkadian people came up with the new language of Elam.  Sargon then called himself “King of the lands” and “King of the Four Quarters” too.  Then soon after Sargon went into battle at Babylon.  Sargon had fought hard, he had won the battle once again.  Then after the battle the Hittites came and destroyed Babylon.

This is what Sargon looked like.
